Cliff, looks like you may have a new world record there. Several people have indicated they would like to see you postpone the picking of this giant until it has grown all that it will. Others know you have to report back to military duty and would be unable to do so. If you want the $1,000.00 from the GWG (I hope you are a member)and a more certain world record then you have a proxy represent you and your melon to a later contest. The rule is you have to personally be there unless you have a good excuse. Well,in my opinion military duty is the best excuse of all. There would be absolutely no problem with a proxy there to represent you.If you have doubts then call and check. I know you would be a little disappointed not being there in person. But you could gain a world record, a lot more cash and all the glory that comes with being the best there is.Think about it.

Excuse me for not prof reading my first post on this thread. A few of the words are a little jumbled.Just think Cliff, if you are the first person to break 300 pounds, that will be historical. I think you owe it to yourself and other growers to wait until the perfect time to pick this melon. We don't want Chris to become complacent do we?

Tennessee Dreamer, after reading your post I came up with a plan albeit a bad one. I have a portable, flat industrial scale, that I planned on sliding under the melon after lifting the flower end a couple of iches and placing a towel wrapped 2X4 underneath. When I went to lift, nothing not even an inch, I could not budge it, and i'm a pretty big boy.
Plan B; Friday afternoon I have my dad and my son coming to help me pick it. Somehow we will get the scale underneath before picking it. If its within striking distance I will delay and take it to Washington County, AR. It will be 69 days old Friday so there is not much time left.

My only worries are the blue foam board they are growing on. Maybe you have done it that way for years with no problem, but all mine had soft, leaky spots last year growing on the same insulation.

Sorry Chris, I didn't mean to offend you.I know you aren't complacent. I suppose you could become so if you continue to dominate the sport for several more years. Just stirrin' the puddin' a little. :-)
To be serious, I think the world record belongs here in Tennessee. Also,I think we have to look out for those pesky Michigan growers. They are a little too quiet if you know what I mean. That is of course except for Mark. And Mark sounds like he's growing some serious competitors this year. :-)

That's right pumpkin bell, just as every good grower (especially the ones in Michigan I think) would like their own state to hold the title.Don't get mad now Mark; that is intended as a compliment. It's just natural, and some growers will go to extremes to be the best at what they are doing. That includes myself I think.Problem is, their can be only one who really is "the best". Chris is determined to stay at the top of the sport and other growers are determined to top him. Someday someone will. That's just the way of things in the world. :-)
