Ive put my seedling watermelon plants into 4 gallon buckets. My question is how aggressive are the roots on giant melon plants.I want to have a idea on how big of a watermelon plant is before it will be rootbound in a 4 gallon size container.

A long time. The roots go out, & not very deep. they will hit the sides in 2 weeks or less, but maybe not the bottom for alot longer. James could tell us better, as he pot grows for a long time before planting.

I use 9" drain tile 1' tall, and yes, the roots hit the sides and start turning. It doesn't seem to root bound them, but it I suspect it has some effect. Although they are shallow roots, they are not all that shallow with depths of up to 10 to 12 inches.
