IT would be a shame to grow a whopper and miss out on some big bucks!!!!!!

I have had this idea nagging me to suggest offering one prize place to a non-club member, as long as all other rules are followed, especially the official inspection and weigh-in.

Perhaps it would serve to extend the intention of camaraderie in the watermelon growing community at large, and to show an appreciation of great growing over club membership?

I think the GWG was formed to " extend the intention of camaraderie in the watermelon growing community at large", I'm not on the board but wouldn't like club money going to non members. Just my 2 cents worth.

Sorry, you must be a member to win a prize. That said, any of us are more then happy to help fellow growers. Just post a question, it will get answered. We want everyone to set new personal bests, Thats what we are trying to promote, with a small financial incentive to boot ;) We know its expensive & time consuming to grow. So if you can get a little reward at the season end, so much the better.
We are not in it for the money. 30 days at min wage would give us a lot more money & WAY better working conditions ! LOL

The 10 bucks covers news letter postage bubbles etc. Most of the prize money comes from auctions.I dont think it would be fair to paying members,to offer a non member prize. If anyone needs seeds $ & cannot afford to buy at auction,I can help you out,Markclementz@comcast.net please leave a subject.

I can see your point, Handyhomegrown, the pool is mostly from those people buying seeds. I wasn't really thinking about the money...thought it would add another worthwhile angle or two to give one outsider a chance.I have seem other groups do this but don't remember when. Oh well. Thanks for the replies.

If there going to grow a Melon they dont need to be an outsider for 10 bucks there an insider,I believe we are the cheapest club in the world.I used to spend that much on cigarettes a day.Its not about the Money! The money just makes it more exciting, like playing 25 cent poker, not as fun without the Quarters.Sat nite I played Texas Holdem with my expert child hood buddies,I wasnt supposed to win the 50$ pot,Im the rookie,Oh well they will get over it!lol

Yeah, poker comes to mind here too. I am not going to finish explaining where I was trying to come from. I can see there won't be agreement... and it is not a big deal.

It's o.k., Mark. I was just agreeing with you about the poker analogy to the prize money situation.
