I thought it would be interesting to learn when people start there seeds and also the dates the melon plants go into the garden.

Being new at this, I will be trying different things, but my highest hopes will likely be attached to late April through May plantings. Both direct seeded, and transplants started a month in advance will be tried... until I get good plants to choose from.Added tidbit: Our local "exhibition only" fair starts on June 10th and ends July 4th!

I don't know how well they will direct seed. They like heat to germinate.

The only grower that I know of that direct seeds is Bill Donkers. ( He mentioned it in a GVGO article.)

I thought I read that one of the heavy hitters does o.k. with direct seeding at optimal times? I would not try it; early, without back-ups done more carefully indoors, or with a scarce seed.

I will start the process in late March with hopes to have plants breaking ground by April 1st.

You can direct seed if your in the low 80s ground should heat to 90 by mid day,use cables at nite .I hope a bird dont get it!lol .Im thinking april 18th.trans plant may 1st.
