Now if the GPC was into it, they would form a Giant Watermelon Oversight Committee and appoint your officers, or at least some of them, to that committee. Then you could do your own thing but as a part of the GPC. They could do the same for any other vegetable where there was enough interest. Then there could be uniform standards etc.

We are looking at what TD said....weighing at the GPC weighoff (most do melons or would right?) Then use the results to award prize moneys. easy as pie since thats what is already being done ! The GPC already lists all the weights on the homepage. Does that answer your question ?? Were not trying to change anything, only add to & improve.

The Watermelon did not get big in one day.It took time and effort. Lets set goals... pay dues... one auction..maybe 3 news letters a year. (remember planting time .. growing time.. takes time) . We all get real busy in season! Lets keep it fun and worry free! Many working in one goal will make a great GWG.

I've been to a couple of weighoffs that do strictly pumpkins/squash. If someone brings a melon to a weighoff & is turned away will they be punished by the GPC, or have their status stripped. It is possible it could happen.

I think you should consider awarding only one money prize per grower per season in order to encourage more growers. As it stands, let's say that Chris or someone else has the 5 largest melons in the organization for a single year. Then he would win all 5 top monies and everyone else would be shut out. I think it would be a lot better experience to spread the money among 5 different growers. It just seems to me it would be a better experience for more people if we did it that way.

Guys, How about setting up a time in Chat one night for everyone to voice questions, concerns, club structure before everything is committed to paper. I think with the way some recent events have unfolded getting the club off to a sound footing is in everyone's best interest. You could do this over a couple of nights and cover BIG concerns people have when getting into an organization where there is other peoples money involved. Additionally if the thought is to seek sponsors, I would rather this thing go a little more slowly than faster. You only get once chance to make a first impression and having your "stuff" together can make all the difference in the world.

It seems like there are more new and interested growers every year and I think it is great that several of you fellows decided it was time for us to separate ourselves from the pumpkin growers a little better.Thank you for the GWG. As valuable "how to" information is passed around along with more and better crosses of the genetics; I am sure an increasing number of growers will be growing bigger & bigger melons every year for many years to come. It's going to be interesting. It gonna be mighty tough for anyone to knock off the Kents though. I think I will make my goal for this year to grow at least one melons bigger than the Kents smallest one entered into competition. That would indeed make for a pretty good year I think.

Hi Tina And Frank.I wish I had something awesome to send you guys for the grand prize. I do have some pretty brown seed from a 2010 melon. The plant was unhealthy and the melon grew to only about 100 pounds. But the seed was from my 207 and I self pollinated it. The 207 had a lot of unrealized potential due to poor growing techniques from me. I have a lot of good seeds I have acquired from others but I will grow this seed also as I think it very worthwhile. So, if you have any interest send me your address and I will send you plenty of seeds from it.I am looking forward to your dairy entries as I do every year.I wish a lot more of us would make regular picture posts to a diary. The posts are a lot of fun and a learning experience also I think.

We love doing the diary. It is alot of fun and yes a learning tool too. So I would say everyone should have to post a diary...LOL..We learned by looking back past two years of our diary that the second season we used blue tarps and the pkns aged/cantalouped alot faster then this past season when we used silver ones. So the silver ones will go up again this season. And also black weed cloth will be going down near MELON. So everyone in the GWG post a diary if you can, they are fun for all of us to look at and see/learn from each other. :)

We might & I said MIGHT! use those trucks as trophys for club this year with a photo insert on 1 side of melon & engraving on other side of melon.Just thinking out loud I will suggest to others on committee so grow the melon Tall corn put it on your truck, drive to weigh-off, you might win one!!!
