Well for me -you have to go with what grew the world record ,witch is the 239 Leonard-and you have to find melons that have good length and girth ,so that would be the 291-as for others you just have to go for it -but for me I go with the line of seed anything hand pollinated I like ,267 Edwards,so these three for sure will hit my patch -also i like the cross of the 170 Mudd, and the 224 both of these look great to me !as of my own seeds the 163 and my 136 gets my attention again this year-I feel a person should always grow one or two of there own! one more that I really like is the 228 pleasant, witch grew my personal best as of now.these are the pics for my 2011

You ask what seed thats singular my hunch which is usually wrong is the 255 which grew the 267 Edwards & the 260 Kent.Thats the mother of the next WR which will weigh 312 pds & come from my patch.LOL I hope you all grow a New World Record.this year & there all 1 pd smaller than mine.I beleive the 267 & 260 were still growing & were picked for early weigh-offs.See there are no secrets we all share info.If the Lords willing & the creek dont rise the 312 will be there.

Hey Janet, could you bring me a few of those 260's to Richmond? Those genetics sound too good to pass up. Thanks.

I think the watermelons in the supermarkets are bigger, than the watermelon from a german watermelon grower. LOL But this will change this year. LOL

Not much people growing watermelons in Germany. The European Record is 107.4lb, but I don't know what the record from Germany is.

It's possible to weigh a watermelon at the EGVGA Contest in Germany in Ludwigsburg.

I'm betting that 107 woun't last long. There are to many good growers over there, someone is bound to get interested in melons.

That shouldn't be too hard to beat Stephan. Perhaps you will be the new German record holder at the end of this coming season. Good luck to you.

Jane & I are growing our own 222.4 Hunt & likely either the 239 Leonard or the 224 Westfall (mother of 222 Hunt). We think the 224 has the stuff to go much larger if grown by a more experienced grower in one of the southern States. Our 222 last year was a late pollination @ July 20th. It was growing very well through Aug, until the cooler Sept temps slowed it down considerably. I think that we could have given the Canadian record (239) a run for it's money if we could have gotten an earlier pollination date. This year we'll start a little earlier & see if we can get a bigger plant, with an earlier pollination date. Growing watermelons here in Canada is sometimes a real challange & at times next to impossible, but some of us have found a way to be able to compete at a higher level dispite the cooler temps. Good luck everyone.

Thats impressive for a July 20 set, no matter where your at. July 4 is about the deadline down here. Gets to hot to set one.

The key for us to getting a fast growing melon last year was to have a large plant growing when we pollinated it. It is very impressive to see how much it grows each day when you have 300 sq ft of plant behind it when it's pollinated. I remember Marv Mitchell telling us about how he grew his 199 a few years back & it was pollinated @ the last week of July.

Agree, you can't get a good melon if your plant is only 50 sq ft. Got to have something to push that melon.
