well since watermelon growing is so populat at the moment I thought this should be woth mentionin. the ones <ho have ben here for quit sometime might know this. a few years back a grower from china grew a 325lbs watermelon but it never came in officially, he has a diary here on the site and I think that watermeoln should be worth planting. believe it or not but it was 325lbs and since there isn't much infor on part of the world it could have some truth in it. China has the idel climate for melons . maybe some growers who are interested could grow this one. who knows, it could be a very good seed

What can you say? Without any proof it and verification it just doesn't count. A 325 doesn't happen out of the blue. There would be lots of other large melons around it by that grower and by others.
Nothing shows up when searching different patterns looking for it, so at this point we can't take it serious. Of course We would quickly be willing to take it serious if information was brought out, but even then it would have to be at least marginally backed up by other measurements.

That seems to be the extent of the evidence. Perhaps it was a typo? Perhaps someone could email him? Seems like a nice enough fella.

it wasn't a typo, and I believe you would all be to yealous to believe it and will denie it in every way like you always do if someone from another country has somthing that is bigger than you have. don't you? well back to my point that guy lives in Taiwan and is a proffesional grower so I would belive that he could be more trusted than everyone else and If you believe it it's fine and you could have growing them like you have with pumpkins. if you don't belie it well than you don't, I only says that there COULD BE SOME TRUTH IN IT and it can never hurt to try them. I think this is the same way as everyone started growing AG's i the past, isn't it??

you know as good as everyone else that I wasn't refering to that, I'm just telling that some people don't like the fact that it comes from Taiwan. political stuff has nothing to do with this. if you don't believe it it's fine just keep in mind that there are also other people in the world who can grow big fruits. I was only telling this beacause you always denie it if it's not offically, sometimes it just isn't possbile to get things offically. and btw it was never my intention to cause trouble about a watermelon. and you should stop twisting the eaning of my words . I can understand that you want the biggest of all, but you should also respect other people in the world ann that's not always the case here. just keep in mind that there could be a bigger melon in the world.

why care about a stupid book? back in the past a book like that was usseles? who says everything on here is offical? and I believe ETM was already saying from the beginning that we should grow it to try it and see what it does, offical or not. not everyone can have the possbility to get it in the books. you should understand that every country is diffrent and not everything is as easy as is looks. and this has nothing to do with drama, if you think it's worth figthing for you should do it no matter what other people think about it.

In my Opinion whether it did or did not weigh in at 325 Lbs. doesn't matter - The official record is the official record and if it was not weighed in and made official then it is not recognized as the official largest ever grown (It is too easy to manipulate photos to make things look bigger than they actually are and as was stated it is hard to tell from a photo whether it is or isn't that large ( For Example a couple minutes in photoshop and you have this : http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc189/JDFanning_bucket/melon01.jpg ) -- not sayibg that is the case here but just saying if it isn't made official there is no way of knowing for sure !

Good one JD, can I have seeds from your melon ! LOL
If the guy wants to send me seeds & history, Or address for a bubble, I'll be happy to consider it for my patch. Otherwise its a great melon & I wish him much sucess. The 325 wont stand too long anyway, so it will all be moot in a few years. No sence getting stired up about it.

I don't care where its grown, if its big, i'll give it a try. I'm sure there are lots that are grown all over the world that are big & never get official weights. I wish he would come on here and post. Takes alot of effort to get one that big.

I guess I don't know why we have comments about not believing something just because it comes from another country. That's just strange because I really haven't seen any comments that enforce that stereotype. We live and die by our measurements and verifications. I know that different regions of the world grow things better, and that's what makes this great. I also know that like many others, I have sent seeds all over the world.

In most of agriculture the varieties are so numerous that they are given numbers or a series of numbers and letters. I believe this is the case here, 325 is the number of the cross or variety.

ETM, your first comments were very scathing in nature and I can't see where anyone posted anything of a self-righteous nature in this thread. Do you think U.S growers are all self-righteous?
I happen to admire European growers as a whole for entering an organized hobby such as this which, for years was dominated by U.S. growers simply because it hadn't yet caught on in Europe, and catching up very nicely and becoming players in this now global hobby.
Your comments were certainly not warranted.

Shaking my head as I read this thread,,,
As you might have seen, Jack did grow some of my AG seeds, we communicated for a couple of years about techniques we use here. While his heat is extreme for growing giant pumpkins I assume it is near perfect for melons.
I remember some discussion at least in BP chat when he grew the large melons. He is a profession grower, teacher, and well versed in growing all types of plants. Check out his diaries for those few years, you'll be amazed.
I just sent him an email linking to this discussion (we have not emailed in along time) hopefully he will respond.

Paul you are twisting my words, I have never said anything about a natitionality. I only said thatsome people ( not refering to everyone) keep denying everything, sometimes there is a good reason, if it not offical than let it be, just keep in mind that there could have been a bigger melon. I would like to stop arguing about that bullshit about nationalties, you are talking about diffrent topics at the same time and I would like to make an end on this. this obviously turned out in an other way like I wanted it to be.

We want it to be a bigger melon. We want genetics that prove into the 300 pound and even 400 pound range. But we also want some validation. Newspaper article, picture on a scale, competition list, secondary melons that weight close, dimensions measurements.
We want to believe, and then we want seeds to keep it going.
Although racism is talked about in the US, it is typically addressed head on and attempted to be worked out.

ETM -- it was you who started the Racism talk in your post : [Quote]it wasn't a typo, and I believe you would all be to yealous to believe it and will denie it in every way like you always do if someone from another country has somthing that is bigger than you have. don't you?[\end Quote]
Which is why everyone is responding in the way they are - It doesn't matter where the grower is from without verification of some sort on the size you can not judge if it is accurate or not from a picture (As I showed in my earlier post a Picture can be manipulated either intentionally or just due to the angle the pic is taken from so that is not a valid method for determining the size\weight of a fruit) -- Secondly the grower never mentions a weight and as stated earlier the 325 in the name may just be a number used to specify the genetic line it comes from - so he may not even be saying that it was a 325lb. melon in the first place and everyone has only been suggesting that it can not be determined if indeed it was a 325lb/ melon from the pics so not sure why you got defensive and started saying that the US growers do not respect others from different countries as even if this was a melon from the US the same questions would be asked.

I'm not gonna go furthur on the post of JD he is only looking for some kind of trouble that I never wanted to have, sorry if I caused any trouble ( this is not what I wanted to do) . let this be the end of this post. after furthur investigation I realise it maybe wasn't a 325 but something else. sorry to everyone. and let this be the end of topic please

I emailed PP about this big watermelon a couple of years ago and never got a reply, but you will notice that his English is limited. My guess is that this watermelon is up in the 250 lb range and if someone offered me seed I would gladly accept it, but I'm not really that concerned about it. PP gets many of his seeds from the US or Europe. This big watermelon looks like just another American giant watermelon but grown out in a perfect watermelon growing climate in Taiwan. There is no sign it is from a different genetic pool. While folks in Taiwan love watermelon, there is no history there of giant watermelon contests so I doubt this is from any Taiwan germplasm. They do have giant watermelon contests in mainland China and they do have some interesting genetics there, but their big watermelons look nothing like the American giants:

Watermelons originated in Africa. They made it to China about 1000 years ago so they have had plenty of time to breed some interesting stuff there. "American giant watermelon" is just how I am referring to the Carolina Cross hybrids that have been setting the world records for the last 30 years or so by the Brights and others.
