You mean GPC money? $100 for largest, $50 bonus for new WR. Is what I saw on their site.
10 years ago I got $250 for second place and I think $150 for third in 2004.

We need to raise that purse.Us Melon Heads can have our own auction & create a new purse or add to GPC prize monies.10 years ago 1st place was like a 1000$$ LETS BRING IT BACK!!!WHOS FOR IT.They say it was due to lack of interest.Lets show some interest there must be 50 of us at least theres more than 20 on BP alone.PLEASE POST IF INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING THIS MOVEMENT.

would we do it with the GPC ? ,
Would it be any weighoff ?? ,
Would it be any certified weight ?? ,
seems that melons are GROWING in popularity , might be just the thing to bump it up.

Too bad the Snapple Watermelon challenge didn't take place this past season! Remember that? You would of had a nice prize for you new WR.
I don't know that the GPC is that interested in melons. Maybe need to start a GWC? Probably not enough interest in that though. Maybe need to meet in the middle somewhere??

The GPC in very interested in melons & are working to promote it. I would like to stay with what ever they do. They are working on a data base for melons , probally will be this winter before they have it up & running.

I called snapple, they had no clue this fall as to any contest.

I agree, staying with the GPC would be a good thing. IF the effort is really put forth.

We should see if GPC has an interest in this,keeping it with them we could have seed auction to build GPC purse maybe they could match us dollar for dollar,or something like that.I will donate 1-239 2-255s & 267 edwards & some edwards 50 lb. lopes to first Auction.

Concerning a database, if you look at the past GPC lists for watermelons weighed in you will notice ALOT of melons without parentage info. I have been griping about this for a few years now. I don't know who's to blame for the lack of information on the parentage, but how can a database be built if alot of parentage info is missing? Do you just leave those out?
As for raising the prize level, auctions would be good but what is really needed is a sponsor that has their heart in watermelons. I've recently thought about contacting the National Watermelon Promotion Board to see if they have any interest. I still need to research them a little more. We also need a GPC rep. that has their heart in melons to help with the going forward. Just thinking out loud here...Thoughts??

the clubs need a auction just for the payout of watermelon money at there weigh-offs,auction kinda like deb's.watermelon,mater,LG's,cantope seeds.ect.

Dewight, wish they would run that contest again ! I have't heard of the National Watermelon Promotion Board , couldn't hurt to contact them !
I noticed that alot of parents were missing, but they seem to do better this year. Its a start, & with what we can add, it would become very valuable to us growers.

The only problem i see with a fee is that only us would know & pay, alot of growers are not hear to know about it.
i like the idea....of 1 - 5 May some combo of... a sponser,the GPC,auction, will get us what we need.
Maybe several sponsers...500 or 1000 to many companies & orgs. would be nonething, but to us its alot !!

Chris, I think we can put a list together of non-computer Melon Heads. We can then contact them to join & pay fee in advance to raise prize level.I know Marv & Bill would be for it as others as well.Im Hyper all the time,Im like a pit bull when I get a hold of something I dont quit till I succeed.I truly believe we can get this GPC back to 1000$ for 1st place Melons.WE can also get kin seeds donated to our cause & auction those.It would not take long to raise a couple grand nationally.

Dwight Sponsor great plan Do we need to bring sponsor to GPC.How does this work???I could find sponsors on a local level I can think of 3 or 4 I could sell on sponsorship.We need a connection on a national company.

Hhg, get Snapple involved again!!! Serious, if they did it once, they might do it again!!! I am gonna do Google thing for Snapple and ask em!!! I am also gonna donate $100 for an extra for the biggest melon, at the Bear Wallow weighoff in '11, and $50 for the biggest Lope!!!! Hope it helps!!! I do agree that we need to awl talk to our GPC Reps...wish I had a list for you, but if you go to the GPC site, you should be able to find out who yer rep is?!!! Peace, Wayne
