For a number of years I have been opening up melons at each of the festivals for the crowd to eat. I just take in a knife and big spoon and lots of paper towels.
On Saturday I opened up my two melons (145 and 193), and one of Dave Bhaskaran's melons (I hope he didn't notice) :-)
I think it does a lot to get others to grow the giants, and I know that the festival organizers I really appreciative of it. I have seen many people wrapping seeds in paper towels to take home.
So...Is anyone else doing likewise?

james the giant growing craze seems to have never gotten started here in texas but everybody out were i live has a garden. so i figured late this winter i would get with the local feed store and organize a local watermelon contest i would supply the seed from 1 of my melons and i was going to give out 100 dollars to the person that grew the heaviest melon on the seed i donated.

James glad to hear this -I started this the first year I started my weighoff here in Frankfort ohio -myself and Tony Vanderpool-cut up 530 lbs of, watermelon this past year -we do this every Sunday of the memorial day weekend -because we always get the same question, over and over -can you eat thses things?so we just let them put there choppers to the test -and we`ve not had anyone say they didnt like it-and it does get people involved -who may other wise may have just passed us by -plus it`s my favorite part of the show -and after that 530s we gave away ,we could have given more ,but we would have been given ,other peoples melons away-we cut up three of tonys and two of my kids -other then getting attacked by the bees we had a great time-funny part was-you ought to have seen the trash guys face when he picked up the box of melon rines-it was worth a millon dollars-lol

James, I was wondering where that melon went! LOL Hope we can do the same at Stillwater....last year it snowed up there, but I still open'd a watermelon and people still liked it in 35 degree weather! This year looks like it will be warm! Knock on wood!

My favorite was when a couple walked up and asked if they could take a picture of their child inside my now empty 193 pounder. They lined it with a large trash bag and a photo op was born. It was cute.

Next we will have to find a child volunteer to enter into the Sunday Regatta in a watermelon shell.
