I had to pick the last Mtn Hoosier yesterday. Despite having it on 2X4's it still rotted. Never had it happen before. It was still gaining about a pound a day when I found the spot. It weighed 110. I think it could have gone 115 to 120 if the rot hadn't got it.

Very nice melon Jake! I think my biggest one last year was maybe 103. I was just letting them set on all the melons they wanted to. I believe I ended up with 5 or 6 fairly nice melons on each of 2 vines. Will you grow these again? Did you say you crossed any of them with Carolina Cross?

I would like to see if I can get some good dark rinds going, so I do plan on planting them again. I selfed one and crossed one with the 259 Kent. Some of the seeds out of your 103 were crossed with a carolina. The one I crossed with the 259 was already half so next year it will be 2/3 carolina. We see how much color I lose. Ironically the biggest one did not appear to be crossed. It looked just like a black diamond. Not even any faint stripes. I thought I might even throw in a cobb's gem next year to see what happens. I plan on keeping the 110 seperate though to keep it pure.

I just picked mine the other day it weighed 76 pounds. They are really pretty melons! Mine had some Carolina Cross in it too. With a longer shape and if you looked really hard you could see stripes through the dark rind.

big moon, what did your female bloosoms look like. Some of mine (the crosses)looked just like carolina blossoms but turn dark about 7 days old. The uncrossed ones were round and dark from the begining. The density of the pure ones was alot more. They went way heavy to the chart, while the crosses were pretty close. If I could get a Carolina to go 10%+ heavy I'd be in buisness.

I didn't notice what the blossoms were like. If I were to guess, I think they would have been more like a Carolina Cross. I love the idea of working in some of the 'mountain hoosier' into the 'carolina cross'. Especially if they would go heavy!
