Earlier in the year I had lost several plants to the little bas***ds, got some good systemic insectacide all for the most part is well. Within the last few weeks I havn't noticed to many on the big melons but my Okra, my cantaloupes, even my fig bush has them. Well today I went to check the bottoms of some moon and stars and the first one I rolled over had probably 10-12 under it. I went and got some seven and mixed it about 10 times stronger than normal and began moving melon and contact spraying them all. It was like a invasion of the squash bug. Did I mention in June and July they were even on the corn!
So are they always this bad, and has anyone else noticed the increase of the bugs?
What I think I gonna do is as soon as I haverst my last CC is I gonna torch everything. That way I "might" kill all adults and hopefully kill all eggs. I'm not sure how they overwinter but burnt eggs can't possible hatch in the spring.
So is torching them the best thing or is there something better to do?

They always seem to get worse towards the end of the season. Always have alot down here. They must like the heat. My dad always burns his garden, it does seem to help. Ussually nothing left of mine to burn. Did you have any luck with the concentrated sevin. I poured a cap full on one one time. He was still alive when I got tired of watching to see if he died.

Not sure if it killed them, but I know it pissed them off!!!
Today, cutting okra, I probably squshed 10 with my fingers, that didn't even kill, just crippled'em.

my neighbor about a mile away had them so bad he gave up on his garden.i also had them but i sight srayed almost every day with soap and water . funny thing they were on everything but my melons. only saw a couple the whole season on melons but they loved the tomatoes rite beside them. the soap and water treatment was time consuming but kept them at bay . come real close a couple times cranking up my sprayer on 4wheeler with malathion .

Same here, i see them on my tomatoes, but not ( that i have seen) on my melons. Maybe they like tomatoes better. Was gonna pull up the tomatoes as they are mostly done....but i might leave them now. Don't want to chase them to my melons ! LOL

I haven't seen them much at all. So chalk one up for the killing Minnesota winters. They have to be good for something.

I scraped some Squash bug eggs into a container of pure bleach, put the lid on it and placed it in the scorching sun for three days. Popped the lid open and was greeted by a wonderful new crop of babies! They are hard to eliminate.

Sorry Kirk malathion won't work either. Sounds like if we want to still be able to eat our melons, we need to plant some squash or tomatoes to keep them busy.

I wouldn't eat any of them Holloway! Seriously, warrior, bifenthrin (most labels), asana, and thionex (very dangerous) all work well on the little devils and are labeled for use on watermelons. Just watch the max dose per season, return entry and PHI on the label.

if you are going to eat it i would not spray with any of those. i think that i'll do just like i did this year.there are things they like better than melons.i will be planting tomatos close to my melons again.rather sacrifice a few tomatoes than melons
