Depends if the stem is alive or not.If there is any life in the stem I would leave it on the vine. If the stem is completely dead then pick & store it.

If the stem & vine are alive it will hold. Also, what is the condition where its laying ? Whats it on? Dry sand, wet dirt, boards, foam ????

Here's what I would do. I would hit the vine with a high N water soluble fertilizer. Even something like Miracle Grow. I have found that it will wake the plant back up and you will get some last minute growth from the vine and weight to the melon. I do this typically in September when it cools down and I still have weeks to go before the weigh off.

Rob, last year something chewed the main at the stump. I cut the main about 2ft from the melon and stuck it in a 5gallon bucket. a month or so later, it lost about 2 pounds
