Congratulations to Marty for his excellent showing at the Iowa State Fair. Not only did he take 1st & 2nd place for largest long watermelon but also took 1st place for largest tomato, kohlrabi,zucchini & long gourd & won several other places to boot. Way to go Marty!

Thanks everyone, Well the 179.7 was on track to be bigger than its mother but the heat in the hoop was too much this year. This is the second melon that the stem sapped a reddish brown thick liquid where the stem meets the vine. Anyone else have this happen? The melon really slowed down and the sulfer dried the stem but then the stem was brown and woody.Thats why it was only 136 pounds. Probably only 45 days old when it stopped. The stem was not even attached when I picked it.

Congrats Marty, Also the 179.7 grew my first big melon at 125 est. lbs .
