I'd like to try growing one or two giant watermelon plants next year, and because I'm a bit short for space, I'm already starting to plan out my gardens for next year. It might be a bit early to ask, but would somebody be kind enough to fill a bubble with a couple melon seeds? If I can get them in the next couple months, that would be great. My email is Juliancolton2@yahoo.com. Thanks.

Julian, I recommend you wait to see who the winners are this year, and get on board with the best genetics. There will be lots of offers of seeds this fall. People are very generous in this forum. There are also great places you can buy seeds, such as Bright's organization in Hope Ak.
Watch the posting and when the first people start offering free seeds, just prep a self addressed stamped bubble envelope and get yourself some.

It might be a good idea to wait, but I'm not picky; I'll take anything that will germinate and is proven to have grown decent melons. I'd rather deal with this now rather than during the thick of seed-swapping season, but if it's more standard to wait until the winter, I'm fine with that.

Julian, it's too early to get ggod seed from this years crop. Most of the seed give aways go on toward the end of the year and early the following year.

Aren't melon seeds viable for at least a few years? I don't necessarily need seeds from 2010's harvest.

Sure they are, I can send you some seed from my 207 from last year. Send a SASBE to Dennis Masterson, 1225 Woodberry Dr, Knoxville Tn, 37912 and I will send you some seed.

Well Julian, You have to understand our mentality. We are all chomping at the bit to get the seeds that proved their genetics already. Last years seeds are so...Well last years. We want the new genetics that broke the world record, or showed some other major characteristics. That's how the envelope is pushed.

Is it easier to get the best watermelon seeds than it is to get the best pumpkin seed?

Dennis, that would be great, thank you. I'll prepare a bubble sometime soon. 1320, will do. Melon Man, I understand that, and I totally respect your individual "criteria", so to speak, for sending out seeds.

I'm having some trouble understanding the genetics. Is CC sometimes crossed or recrossed with other large melons, like Kolb's Gem/Cobb's Gem? Are the larger CC melons being crossed with each other?
Also, is the giant size a dominant or recessive trait?
