But what will you do different next year?
More space per plant and no vacation during growing season, weeds took over!

Don't know for sure what next year will bring, but were I to try growing them again next year-
Most certainly more space per plant, no question. I've put myself in a very difficult position by growing everything so close together.
Probably try to get different seed - This is my third time with the Burpee #183. May need a better spot.
Things haven't went as well as I'd hoped this year. So far, I haven't really found suitable base soil. I hope to locate some good watermelon soil this fall.

I planted mine rather close to the garden edges and noticed that the roots go much farther than I thought they would. So next year I will plant them toward the center more and I will not walk to the stump with out walking boards. Also, I will have to spray fungicide more often ,as my plants are nearly finished from some disease.

If I am well enough to grow then no more plastic. The roots need to breathe. And less watering as I think I watered way too much. Four of my plants are actually still alive though not very healthy and have done a little better since I backed off on the water and soluble fertilize. No good melons this year though.

Move patch, grown them too long in the current location and back mulch away from stump farther. Also I would not bury a leggy plant up the stem again. Never had much trouble in the past, but with all the rain this year I had two die. After pulling dirt back I had no more trouble.
