Has the 251 Mudd seeds ever reproduced a melon that was close to 251lbs? I have one that is dark green color and good shape and length but the girth and weight is behind some of the other ones 27 days 83 lbs 3 lb average.

I keep a record of the daily averages of the melons by dividing the weight by the number of days. In order to have a good melon I believe you need to average above 3 lbs. per day for the life of the melon. The 251 grew 74 days and averaged 3.4 lbs. per day. Your averages will start out small and then climb. If you can get them to average above 4 lbs. per day for a 15 period, you going to end up with a biggun. The biggest melon I know of grown off the 251 was Freddy Burcham with a 219. I grew a 175.5 off it last year.

Chris How big was the Mudd 251 melon that you used to cross for the Kent 209?
I think a lot has to do with the plants health and we have been HOT not just a little hot but a hole lot of HOT and some plant have not like it but other have LOVED it. The 251 Mudd has not cared for the HOT weather but it is alive and trying.

Tom, It was grown in a half barrel. The melon on it weighed 53 lbs. I just grew it as a pollinater. I did save seeds from the 53 lb melon. It was a controled cross & the reverse of the 209 kent. So it was the 251 Mudd X 255 Mitchel. Had the biggest seeds i ever saw !

Definately, not counting any chickens here. I'm getting good early growth, but had lots of problems already. Don't know if the plants will hold out long enough. Not really expecting a real bigun.

Melon did another 7 inches in OTT and added another 5.4 pounds...WOW...so 11 pounds in two days...But some more extreme heat coming this weeks...couple of days with temps at 101...so plants will age faster..So all we can do is hope for the best. :)
