Two days ago I discovered a very hiiden melon on one of my later plants. It was quite larger and much better shaped than the melon I was growing, and had better vine placement, somewhere in the 50-60lb range. So I culled my orginal melon and now growing the newer one. The melon is very long by the looks but not huge on girth and I don't know how old it is. So is there any way to tell by it's future growth if it's a long shinny melon or a extra long fat melon? The seed is a 211 Boyette, which came from a Edwards plant, and I'm unsure of the measurements from either.

After reading that, it confussed my on the question I had. I'll try again. By not seeing a melons growth for the first few weeks, is there a way to track is measurements to tell what shape the mature melon will achieve.

Thats a tough one, what i do is start tracking it when you find it, then compair those gains to current or recorded gains. See how they compair. Example, say you have a known melon that gains 4 lbs a day from 60 lbs to 80 lbs over 5 days. if your unknown melon does it in 4 days, then its better, if it takes 6 days, its worse. Now none of that will tell you the exact age, but you can get close by compairing size. Hope that helps

Acctually it is not that hard to miss a 50 pound melon if you have big plants. The vines get pretty thick. I found one about that size last year cleaning up the patch after we picked the big ones. It had to have pulled some juice from the plant.
