Yesterday, I noticed I had some stump rot starting on 6 of my 7 plants. Doug gave me some tips and some captan. I cleaned off all the rot I could get. Pullled back lanscaping cloth about a foot. I cleaned the stumps with 20% bleach last night. I did it again this morning and after it dried, I put captan on the stumps. Today the 243 Kent and 246 Bright were wilting pretty bad. Is there anything else I need to do or just hope for the best.

After doing some research, I am afraid it could be fusarium causing the stump rot. The soil has been really wet this year. It will not drain well the subsoil is still soaked from all the rain this winter. I hope thats not the case or I'm done. It would be a shame My 259 Kent four day average last four days was 5 lbs a day. I sure hope it is not the case cause I'm not sure where I could move the patch to next year.

A lot of the pumpkin growers also blow a fan (24/7) on the areas after they clean them like you did. Just a light breeze to help dry the area asap. Best of luck !!

I'd recomend a sacrifice to the lab gods. A portion of one plant should give you some answers and peace of mind for the future.

Can you post a up close picture so we can see ? You have to rotate growing areas even if that means cutting down on how much you grow each year. You must let the soil rest or grow something else besides curbits.

What is a good lab to send a sample to. If I do start a new patch how far does it need to be from the old one? I will try to get some picks up.

Not very far, as long as its not the same dirt or drainage from the old area. A few feet would work.

I send mine to our state lab in nashville. They accept out of state samples for an additional fee. Check with your county agent to see about GA labs. E-mail me if you need help from nashville and I'll give you the info.

Thanks Guys, I may have found a contact at UGA but I'm going to move it up hill next year any way. I bet my old patch will make the best corn patch in the neighborhood. Some of the plants still look fine but the fruit has slowed.

I pulled the 243 a few days ago. I think it was just stump rot. There was no brown or red streaks in the veins. Most of the plants still look good. I got it stoped on most of them. Still treating a few small spots. After cutting the 243 open I think I know why I had problems with it. I couldn't find any rot on the outside. I remembered when it was small the wind blew it over and cracked the stump. It healed up later. When I cut it open there was a hollow spot in the middle that was rotten. I just couldn't see it to treat it. Hopefully I can keep going but it may have hurt me in the long run.
