Has anyone grown a large melon on a side vine ? A vine that comes off a main or finger vine. One that does not come from the stump. Alot of my growing tips were burned this past week & i wondered if i should bother setting on sides. I got alot of melons set, so trying to decide it its worth my effort if a good one comes along.

I've got a few melons set on sides that all seem to be doing a bit better than the one on the main. This is the first year I have ever gotten a descent pollination on the main, so I am going to wait things out for a week. I have grown over #200 on a secondary.

I'll be able to tell you this fall. I've got sets all over the place. I know its early but the 14 day measurements are all very close.

My 232 and 190 were set on secondaries, or finger, I guess they are the same thing?? The few years I grew I was never able to get one to set on the main in time.
You guys are lucky to already have melons set this year. First the storms took thier toll on the plants here and when I finally got a good looking melon to pollinate, it was too hot and it didn't take. Now it looks like I'll have a shot this weekend and it will be a bit cooler, only 92 Sat & Sun...

Dewight, I had the same problem last week. It was very hot and I couldn't get any to set. I filled some 12oz. coke bottles the night before and stuck them in the freezer. The next morning I put them under the box when I pollinated and they all set. It may have lowered the temp just enough. Chris I hope finger vines work I don't have any choice on a few.

Jake, yes i think finger or main vines work fine. I was asking about side vines, the ones that come off the main or finger vines.
Must be the heat, i have had alot not set this week too.
Lost some of the best ones due to the heat or errors.

I grew my 225 on a side vine. I have always had problems with setting fruit on the primary, and by the time I can get one on the primary, it's a significant distance from the stup. The side vine sets are always closer.
