Dennis, Some of the seeds in your 103 Mtn hoosier must have crossed with a carolina. I started several and noticed one had alot more vigor than the others. My dad and I made a bed for it at his house. The plant is bigger than any Carolina plant I have ever had. It started putting on females this week and they all have stripes. Do the Hoosiers put on the dark green color later or do I have a cross? I is a very strong plant with some nice females. If it is a cross it will be interesting to see what it produces.

Hi Jake. I think you must have a cross. As I remember the Mountain Hoosiers are dark with a darker stripe from the get go and nearly round in shape. The vines are very vigorous and early. You must have a hybrid cross & I think that's kind of exciting. It could form a line of melons you may want to hang onto. I guess it's unlikely any world records will come of this but it could be a lot of fun seeing what they'll do and knowing you are probably the only person in the country with this line. Please let me know how it goes and I may ask you for some seed back for next year.

The females look short but I pollinated one this morning that was almost 3cm. They are really fat maybe why they look short. There was one or two round ones but I picked them off. The rest are more oval. I selfed one of them and crossed one with the 259 Kent. It will be interesting to see what happens. What characteristics show up from each parent. Who knows.
