I arrived 3 three weeks ago and have gotten settled in working the night shift providing command and control for 4 companies of Explosive Ordnance Disposal soldiers. We get rocketed and mortared about every 3 days, as long as you are in a hardened building or near a bunker its no big deal. If you get caught outside like I did Monday night you can get your bell rung pretty good, I still can't hear out of my left ear.
Now to the important things, The soil near the Tigris river is a sandy loamy soil and looks to be very fetile. I have picked out an area near a canal that I am going to try to grow a couple of melons. weeds will not be a problem but keeping the plant watered may be. I am still working on solutions for the high temps any advice would be appreciated.
Best of luck in 2010
Cliff

May God Bless you and keep you safe. Watermelons originated somewhere in the part of the world you will be growing in. I hope you grow some big ones.

Cliff, thanks for your service and don't get too distracted with the melon project. I guess a little distraction is good for you though and it sounds like an interesting project. Plenty of water will help to keep the plants cool if you can get the logistics figured out. Organic mulch will also be helpful if you can figure out where to get some. Good luck & please keep us posted.

Good luck Cliff, be careful out there. Wouldn't that be something if you broke the world record in Iraq. Wonder what their record is?
