Hi,

I have a 201 Bright that has two keeper melons on it. One is on the main vine, and the other is on a side that comes right out of the trunk of the main. They are the same age and very close in size, but the one on the side vine is growing just a little faster and looks like it has a better form. they are very close though. I am having a hard time choosing which melon to keep. Any suggestions from experience.

Not concerning this melon, but for future decisions. I would love to get everyone's opinions on choosing melons on secondary and further out vines. How much of a drawback is it.

Thanks

I always choose the one that is growing better. I think that where it is on the vine is of no consequence if it is doing the best job of growing into a giant.

I look back to the size of the fruit at the time of pollination. I think that speaks well of the potential size of the finished melon. Short round melons at pollination time, and you get short round melons at completion. Yes, I take growth rates into account also, and sometimes vine placement, but I look for the female size, because I think in this case, size does matter.
