How come the brown seed melons are not considered another variety? Are they a hybrid from the open pollination? I grew a long, orange melon with white seed in 07(orangelo). This year the offspring were all black seeded and round. I have several varieties I grow each year, so obviosly it was a hybrid.

I wondered about that myself, but frankly the melons and plants look exactly the same as the white seeded variety. I would also suspect that they cross with the white seeded ones. I suspect it's just a slight genetic change.

Dave B dropped some red seeds at my house last night. They are open pollinated so they stand a chance of being crossed with white varieties. I might try them out anyway.

I wonder if I need to start keeping track if the melon has red or white seeds to determine if one produces bigger fruit.
