Subject: How to tell when ripe!!??

OK I don't have giant melons, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to tell if my eaters are ripe. They all thump different depending on size. Can someone pleaaaase help me figure this out. I picked a big one the other day and it was white inside. Darn it. Thanks you.

oops, just read below. So the tendril turning brown is a sure fire way.
Either that or I could try to hump the melon and see if it's ripe I guess??? :)

the tentril can be dead on some varities and they still like some being ripe. I like to roll one over and if the bottom of it has turned a creamy straw looking color mine are usually ripe. I use to grow one that would usually be ripe a couple of weeks after the tendril died. doug jn. 3:16
