I set the record for largest ever at the Franklin County AL Watermelon Festival. This melon is a third generation from the Bright 248 it weighed in at 199lbs measured 53in girth 38in length its 0TT was 184. I had to pick it at its 52nd day of growth, I think at full growth it would have weighed in at 220-230 maybe. Its on display now at the Morgan County Farmers COOP, After I seed it out I will be more than willing so send anyone seeds who wants them. If you would like some seeds or photos e-mail me cliff.knight@us.army.mil

Congratulations Alabama! It must be really sweet to grow one that big and win first prize.A shame it couldn't grow a bit longer to see what might have been.I would very much like a picture & some of your seeds & have sent you an email.I hope I can do 75% as good as you did next year.

Congrats!! I'm like you I think it would have weighted a lot more if you could have let it grow longer. I would like to get some seeds out of that thing. I'll send you a e-mail soon.

Wow, to live in Alabama and be able to pick a melon in August. Congratulations on a great year. 199 is nothing to sneeze at.

In my tracking tables, for that straight length, you landed in middle of a bunch of 200 pounders. Now we can speculate if only the melon had a chance to develop a little more girth.

Oct-02    Dwyer    228.0    58.30    38.50
Sep-05    Bright    243.0    59.50    38.25

Sep-05    Bright    248.0    57.50    38.00

Sep-05    Bright    227.0    59.00    37.25

Thanks everyone, and thanks Minnesota Man for posting those stats, I did not know I was in that type of company as far as length was concerned.

I posted a photo in the gallery for all to see.

At best I think it would have finished around 56in girth and 39 length. I had one that was outgrowing this one but the plant got yellow vine and the melon stopped growing. It was 27 days old, 46.5in girth, 34in length, 161lbs. I still have 3 others growing, however I don’t think any have the potential to top 199lbs .

I would be interested in seeing a clearer picture of the melon if you have one. From the picture the melon looks quite young. Could have had some more growing to do. You might want to start your plants earlier for next year's competition so you can get that 300 pounder.
