This is my first year growing the cc variety and I have a couple of fairly large ones on the vine. The problem is the SC state fair in oct, and I'll be ready in a month if not sooner. My question, how long can you expect a melon to last after picking it. Thanks.

Well, you are asking a lot. In cool weather, I can get a melon to last in the garage for up to 5 weeks. If I needed to last longer, I would ask the produce manager of a local grocery store if I could store the melon in the back corner of one of his walk in produce coolers. You probably could have one last a few months that way. I would also make sure you wrapped the stem with some wet paper towels and a plastic bag.

You must have started the melons plants back in December if the melons are already ripe.Has it been about 90 days since it was polinated? I recently found out from Melon Man that is how long it takes a CC to mature. The best way to keep these melons right now is to leave them on the vine as long as possible. That is assuming the vines haven't died and the the stems to the melons are still green.I hope this helps some.

You may be able to hold it on the vine for awhile. But as far as its weight, it will lose weight no matter what you do. Sorry
