Just a thought...do watermelon growers shade giant watermelons the same way we do pumpkins or does it matter?

Yes, I put a sheet on them just like a pumpkin.

I use 9 gauge wire loops, gunny sacks, and clothes pins. It's the same wire loops I use for the Remay blankets in the early spring.

I didn't answer the other half of that. Yes I really think it does matter.
It is very easy to see at competitions which melons are shaded and which are not. You see definite growth restrictions on unshaded melons.
