My dad told my that if I take a piece of straw and lay it on the watermelon that if it turns its ready to harvest. Ive tried this and got different results is there a more certain way on knowing when to harvest a watermelon at its peak time. Thanks for any posts

Measure it Josh, if it has not grown any in size in 3 or 4 days it is ready.

check the stem for browning. Also look at the bottom for some yellowing, along with the thumping method. It should sound almost hollow.

If it turns and faces the complete opposite direction while staying ontop of the watermelon. So if the front and back of the melon is facing north to south then lay the straw west to east. if its ripe it should turn and face north and south.
