I was in a patch today that has been severly dammaged with Watermelon Mosaic, to the point the grower has had to rip out several plants. Just a word of warning, keep the cuke bettles in check!

burn the dead plants too. And if you can do a controled burn on your soil. Seems to me that i remeber WMV is somtimes traped in the soil. I could be wrong.

Also concider having any infected soil treated with Basamid as this will hasten the re use of that area and bring it back into production. Basamid treatment is usually carried out by professional contractors but if you can get your hands on some it is easy to apply as long as the treatment method is fully carried out.

Mike

Mosaic doesn't live in soil. It has to have a living host to survive. So somewhere in the area is a PERENNIAL PLANT that is hosting the virus. Aphids spread it around. I was reviewing the list of possible perennial hosts this morning & was really bummed out to find that clower is one of the 50+ families. Grrr.

Other insects also spread Mosaic. Aphids are just the most common. Squash Bugs, Cucumber Beetles, etc all spread it too.

I should of said the virus had atacked the AG's. This grower dosn't grow Watermelons. He said it seems to start on the new growth and then spread to the older tissue. He has removed as much of the affected tissue as he can.

"CLOVER" is what I should have typed. Trifolium sp. White Clover, Red Clover, Hybrid Clover, all of them are potential hosts on a VERY long list.

How detrimantal is WMV to the health of clovers. I never see them showing symtoms of WMV.
