I'm growing giant watermelon for the first time and have a 1 or 2 day old melon at about 4 feet out on what appears to be the main vine. This vine is 6 or 7 feet long and the other vines are about 4 or 5 feet long. Is this melon far enough out from the crown? Is the plant big enough yet to support maximum growth? Thanks, Mark

Mark mine was only 4 foot out and got 168 pounds. Just make sure they are good shaped melons. Good Luck.

Thanks Tall, good link. Marty, it's your 168 that has the melon at 4 feet. Maybe history will repeat itself. It's cylindrical rather than football shaped like my crimson sweet watermelon. I'll watch it to see how it grows. The 168 is growing back to back with the 210.5 D'Amico '05. I saw this watermelon at the weighoff last year in Republic Missouri. I think 4 or 5 of the largest watermelon in the GPC were weighed in Republic in 2005. Can you imagine growing a 210.5 pound watermelon and ending up in 5th place? The 210.5 isn't as big as the 168 yet but it's moving right along now. Mark
