this is the yr of problems for me and mine first corn now melons i have grown crimson sweet before and they are doing well with fruits the size of baseballs. Now the question i have is for those that have grown carolina cross the plants are great the fruits not so great there are soft spots in each of the melons currently growing is this normal for these big type fruits or are they aborting what to do my other plants the crimsons are doing great its just this is the first yr for carolina cross help if you can

one more thing son loves these watermelons there his not mommys would hate to see him dissapointed at the end of the season but a mom will do anything including buying a melon at the end of the yr and tieing it to the vine if i have too lol

If they've got soft spots they're not going to survive. Keep pollinating others as they come and hopefully your son will have one at the end of the season. I'm not sure if they can be saved, as I've never really had this problem. Good luck to you and your son. I really hope you get a good one.

Curvy, Seems to me some people can grow watermelons and some cant because there soil isnt right,watermelons are the hardest things to grow in my opinion and just to add a little to your post,,,,,Phil, why do alot of people have problems growing watermelons and what type soil and PH is the best for these to grow in?

Brooks, I'm really not sure why people have so much problems growing melons. It doesn't take as much work as pumpkins do. A PH of about 6.3 - 6.6 is good. My soil is a clay/loam with a PH of 7.0 and we got 160# last year, so you can grow bigger ones in less then perfect conditions. Our first couple years of growing them didn't turn out too good.

Our growing season is too short for any success with watermelon. Around here they are next to impossible to grow at all.
