I'm wondering the best place(es) to purchase watermelon seed, preferably from large competition winning, or placing watermelons. Are the genetics as important as with A.G.s? Or can you buy store rack seeds that will do just as well(or nearly as well)?

Try emailing Phil Hunt ( Copper ). I am sure he can help you with some great seeds.

I have raised 100+ pounders with stock seeds, but if you can get some from growers do it. They will do better for the most part. My problem is that I was unable to hand pollinate so my seeds are not any good. I had small varieties grow right beside my giants. This year will try harder to hand pollinate.

If I ever end up with anything good I will make seed available.

Also you can talk to growers on Fridays at 8 PM on Yahoo groups bigwatermelons maybe you can find some seeds there.

Also P & P seeds have some giants.

One Question... Are these Giant Watermelon still edible?
or not as tasty as store bought or garden grown from just regular plane old seeds?

thanks Dave

I've had some that were very good. They are not the best tasting that I have grown but they are sweet. They also feed a lot of people.

We had a 197.5 lb that placed 2nd in the GPC for 2004, we were so proud for only our second year growing! I have seeds from it (crossed with a 177# that was officially weighed in as well). I also have seeds left from the parents of both that were dismally small, but my excuse was that it was my first year and my soil pH was 10.2 I'd like to trade seeds actually. . . Anyone want to trade? I have pics.
