I am thinking of changing up plant locations giving me the chance to run more than 16' each way from the main allowing them to be longer....more than a 32' wide plant. Is 32' wide an optimum width or how far can I run those secondaries before they are no longer a benefit to the plants health and pumpkin's final growth?

Id be interested on the heavy hitters view on this subject.Anybody thats grown say 2300 plus and has multiple seasons under their belt.I dont qualify but Id suspect we dont know what is or isnt optimal on this topic.

With 150 feet, 1448 pounds have been achieved. Draw your own conclusions, I believe that keeping the healthy plant near the pumpkin is more important than large plants. If you have a rot in a node in the main vine, near the pumpkin, you will lose those wonderful 16-foot secondary. Take care of your main vine, that's the most important thing, if you get that, you can try to leave the secondary ones close to the pumpkin longer, but the first secondary ones don't make sense, since they will take away energy from the main vine.

So Ruben do you think a diamond pattern with the pumpkin in the middle of that diamond would be worth a try?By diamond i mean longest secondary's closest to the pumpkin(before and after) and shorter secondaries towards the stump and far end of main.

Yes, cojoe, everything that is close to the pumpkin should always be younger and healthier... If you have a good plant behind you, it will be enough to grow the pumpkin and give energy to all that nearby area. From dap 50, that's essential. I have analysed the growth of my larger pumpkins, with a lot of new area, with tertiary near the pumpkin, Travis also does something similar... and from dap 50 to 80 grew much pounds in world record, you have much more growth. With a Christmas tree, growth stops a lot from the dap 50. It's just my theory, it would be convenient to see the growth data of different plants. We have a lot to investigate on that issue, we have a lot left, and I think it is fundamental. We study fertilisers, hormones, temperatures... but I think the type of plant growth is the most important.

All right, then, here's a plan for someone - veering off-course from the HH validity: Pumpkin is set. Set a string from the center of that pumpkin and go around and cut off anything growing that is longer than that string's end - A cookie cutter, if you will. P'toing!!! Ruben, thank you for your in depth input. I can visualize what you are saying and can see how the older part of the plant grows and enables the pumpkin to the day 50 age then tapers off. Then almost as stage two secondaries with teritiaries adjacent to the pumpkin would be newer and healthier to complete the most important part of energizing a larger healthier pumpkin to its maximum growth.
