I have never grown a 150 square foot pumpkin and may never attempt it, but I thought up this question today that got me thinking. Not sure if it has been addressed or not. Here it is; Would it be ok to grow vertically within the 150 sqare foot area? Say for example Have a fence on the north side of the area that the vine can grow up? Or would this go against the rules.

No vertical structures. But someday soon there might be a "150 leaf competition" that would allow people to experiment with other configurations yet still limit the plant size... I'll probably do a very limited & informal "150 leaf" competition next year... but it might be, oh, say 188 leaves or something. Some such number that does not overlap directly with the 150 sq ft competition. It will promote plant health over plant density, and hopefully give a new angle from which to learn (from the plants and from each other.)

The 150 pumpkin must be grown on a 2 dimensional flat plane. There are hyroponic growers in the contest, but their entire plant is grown on an elevated flat plane. Now with that said. If your entire 150 plant (and the hanging Pumpkin) were grown on a 150 square foot vertical fence that would be OK. I might clarify the directions for that. But it unfortunately would have to be rooted only at the base of the fence. It would be cool, but it would be a hinderance to the grower since only one row of roots at the base of the fence would be allowed. Neat idea though

Currently we have 85 Growers world wide participating in regular gardens in 150 sq ft plots of soil. Plus 2 hydroponic growers participating in the same 150 Challenge on elevated two dimensional level planes. There are a few making a run at the 150 WR. Time will tell.
