I've had good luck with 1 TBS per gallon Baking Soda and 1 oz. per gallon Neem Oil sprayed every week or so. I have a commercial concentrate for the Neem Oil so check the label on whatever Neem Oil you buy it may recommend more that 1 oz. per gallon. I've seen Neem Oil at Rona or Home Depot, it's sold as a "plant shine" because it's not registered for use as an insect or disease control.

Didn't Ontario ban all conventional pesticides? If so then Milk or baking soda.

Milk smilk get the good stuff. Just go to the US and pick some up next year. It should not be hard to get some. Throw it over the Niagra falls and pick it up in the Canadian side. Lol Sorry I made that joke im not trying to make anyone mad

I disagree with your statement that non approved products have to be used. While I still have some insects in my garden but have a regime that keeps them at bay. I should set a new PB this year so I might not ever set a world record or be in the top ten how many people who use chemicals all the time actually are? I've seen people who spray all kinds of stuff on their patch and only grow pumpkins 300 to 5oo Pounds so there are points for both sides of the discussion.

Kirk, I'm glad that botanicals are working well for you. But if folks really need Merit or bifenthrin they should be allowed to use it.

All you really have to do is become buddy-buddy with a local farmer who has his pesticide applicators license...not that I'm suggesting anyone do anything illegal.

Not to get in a lengthy discussion regarding this Steve but we are growing pumpkins as a sport/hobby not growing food for survival so the need to really use it is not there in my mind. Its a hobby that has caught on with addictive results by many and in the end only a small percentage of growers obtain lofty results and the rest of us are having fun trying. The need to use chemicals has become a necessity in the commercial industry due to desimating the land when chemicals were discovered as a very easy alternative to hard work and natural ways. This summer has been a good example of what mother nature thinks of what we have done to the land and earth and believe me I'm no tree hugger etc. but the kids of today wil see things that we cannot even imagine could come in forms of weather because of the imbalance we have created.
Anyhow- sorry to go a bit off topic, using chemicals in Ontario is going on and its just like the people who go out and spray there lawn at midnight with weed killer which was banned first in most cities, its not hard to pick them out as the smell gives them away.

LIL----year after year I get nailed by SVB's......I spend hours pickin off the little brown eggs and no matter what I do I am no frther ahead.I have my daughter and her friends go out into Mmy very small garden and pay them 10 cents /egg.10 buck bounty on a female svb...the last two year I grow seedlings to buddies who are around 50/60 miles from my place.Their pumpkins are coming up 2-300lbs with very little effort..Even with such a small space, I am not expecting record setting pumpkins....I spend so much time prepping, watering, trimming...and READING.really for what????......I luv growing PB's....I luv trying to beat last years record...I luv it when on halloween a liitle kid says WOW MOM look at this....better yet when mom knoocks on the door and says where did U get that???......Im growing for me...and me only but the disadvantage is I know the svbs are comin........My wife recently asked me why you grow if u know u aint goona ever get rid of them things.I said I will quit when we need a crane to get it out of the backyard....I would gladly grow organic, and not use a pesticide ....how to I get rid of the SVBS?????????? please feel free to answer knowing you are getting them>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The weather has been the same for thousands of years. The weather cannot become worse it will just maybe show up in diffirent places. I know this because I am an aspiring meterologist and know alot about the weather. How would pesticide effect weather?

There is no way to substantiate this position. The more time & money spent on research the more we learn how false this is.
Kirk just wants to grow pumpkins for fun. It isn't fun to make a large investment in time, money & materials only to have SVB end the season early. I don't know of any effective SVB treatment that is biorational & works.

How do you get rid of SVB's without chemicals the only way I know how is to not grow members of the curcubit family. I have gotten them but I know growers who have not seen them this year who have gotten them before. Pesticides don't directly affect weather but continual chemical use by humans affects the land and in turn upsets natures balance. And Steve I invest just about as much money as most pumpkin growers and take it seriously as far as techniques and commitment go and volunteering time for our club and I don't expect to change your mind as you are immersed in the chemical side of things and we both have an opinion which is fine which is why I made the comment on how major weather events will affect them. Nic good luck on becoming a meteroligist just don't be one of those fear mongering ones who makes every storm the one to end all storms. Anyhow good luck on finding a solution to the SVB's other than having to move.

Hey Eng6900, I think the little brown eggs on the underside of your leaves are squash bugs, not SVB. SVB's go into the vine and the larve hatch inside the vine. If I'm wrong...somebody please correct me! That's what I always thought.

Consider yourself corrected. SVB's lay eggs outside, on the vines, stems, fruit, and leaves and the eggs hatch and the grubs bore into the plant.

John-D I'm pretty sure you're right. Last year I had several squash vine borer's in my vines and I still grew a 525 pound pumpkin so I don't think they will end your season, just might not get a world record. This year I don't see any signs of SVB and I don't think I'll beat my PB from last year. Eng6900 this link has some good pics of SVB eggs and adults, check it out and make sure this is it. http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://mysite.verizon.net/~korney19/_SVB_eggs2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/cornucop/msg0615371013837.html&usg=__P5tm2rxjiiBbYEa1VhFvvynM03w=&h=480&w=640&sz=22&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=kcXEch74R5MN3M:&tbnh=103&tbnw=137&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsvb%2Beggs%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG

Whatever, the post read " fungicide in Ontario". Milk is good, you may want to look into the practical uses of H2O2 as a fungicide. I'm a lightweight but I've never had any PM issues in my garden. Do some research, lots of good info out there.

I have been told that 10% solution of Hydrogen Peroxide will stop the spread of PM. Be careful if its too strong, you can burn the leaves. The baking soda thing works. Use 1 TBS per gal. Yes, its not perfect but if you don't have anything better....
The SVB thing....Contact me in the winter/ spring...I will fix you up.
Modern agriculture has a term they use called integrated pest management. What this is is using a variety of control methods to control pests with a s little use of pesticide as possible. No farmer wants to spray anything...its just to expensive. many of these modern pesticides have very low environmental impact. Yes, over use and indiscriminate use is very bad. However an outright ban of products that have been proven safe and effective is just stupidity. I really doubt the ban will hold as there are legal challenges happening now.
