The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) recently announced the approval of a minor use label expansion for
Admire 240 Flowable Systemic Insecticide (imidacloprid) for control of cucumber beetles,a key insect pest of cucurbit
vegetables in eastern Canada including Manitoba. The Cucurbit vegetables crop group includes cucumbers, cantaloupes, melons, gherkins, gourds, pumpkins, squashes and a number of Asian cucurbit crops.
The control of cucumber beetles on all crops in the cucurbit crop group has been a top priority minor use issue for a number of years. With the loss of previously registered cucumber beetle control products, the ineffectiveness of available
alternatives, the need to protect pollinators and the urgent need to reduce losses from this serious pest a concerted effort
has been put forward for the past several years to secure a registration that has been available to US producers for some
time. The registration of Admire 240 Insecticide is a major step forward for producers of cucurbit crops in Canada.
Admire is a registered trade mark of Bayer CropScience Inc. This product requires a pesticide licience for purchase and use.
