I just read that parts of southern Nova Scotia are flooding and with lots more rain in the forcast. http://news.yahoo.com/s/cpress/20050527/ca_pr_on_na/wea_ns_rain_records
Just wondering if anyone here is being affected by this? (hopefully not!)

Yeah, I was watching TV today and wondering the same thing. Both CBC and the weather channel had a lot of coverage.
I too hope everybody is OK.

I seen the newscast last night and thought about our Eastern friends. Man, their getting hit bad. I hope there's not any growers in that region.

Yes, it is pretty bad in the Bridgewater area. The township has declared a state of emergency and the Premier of the province is seeking Ottawa for financial aid. Many residents are being evacuated. The few growers like Ben Hebb, Mathew Corkum, and the Wentzell's live in the surrounding area. The rain was suppose to cease today but as of this time, it is raining again. Doesn't look like any pumpkins will be planted in N.S. for a while.

As of this first sunny day on the last day of May, there are no pumpkins planted outside on College Rd. So, are we 3-4 weeks behind schedule? Yes! Do you think we will have pumpkins for the weigh-off and regatta? Still hoping. Do you have lots of pumpkins on the go Will? I may need as many as you can find if there is to be a pumpkin regatta on Sunday, October 9th.

Wouldn't have mattered if any were started in the last month or not, with the lack of sun my month old plants are still at 2 leaf stage. Might as well have waited and planted them last weekend, could have saved a lot of effort and a lot on the power bill.

At the regatta, ol'Leo uses a small pumpkin anyway so there should be lots around like that...and then he stuffs it full of chickenwire and styrofoam. The Trailer Park Boys are going to give ol'Leo a run for his money this year... watch out for Freedom 37! We've got plans....
I'm also thinking that we should have a melon-ski competition...clean out two 50 lb watermelons, strap them to Bubbles' feet, and pull him across the lake with a speed boat. What do you think?
I'm not going to mention what the TPB's have in mind for the long gourds!

I understand what you are saying and it is too bad you learned the hard expensive way about setting your plants out too early. But, living in N.S. and knowing we sometimes have the most unpredictable weather, everyone anticipates an early start. You know we need the longest possible growing season to produce a pumpkin weighing even close to 1,000lbs. Seeds also need that period of time to mature to be able to use for future year's planting. The other word going around this year is we are in for more hurricanes this fall. I saw a notice from Environment Canada and they are predicting 4-5 hurricanes this fall. So, late start...more hurricanes......I think you are right Will; watermelons and long gourds may be the choice pertaining to the regatta this year.

The way Leo moves he could probably tow one of the melon skiers and still place top 3.
As for starting too early this year, at least my plants are still alive, they certainly had a jump in growth yesterday and I expect more of the same over the next few days. I'll chalk it up as a learning experience, and I'll pay much better attention to the weather forcast next year. As for those hurricanes, not alot I can do to prepare the pumpkin patch to survive anything like Juan, so I'll just hope the hurricanes stay off the coast this year.
