Preliminary Results
Entries accepted from specimen harvested and weighed between:
August 1, 2011 and November 1, 2011.
Why the 1 August ? I don't understand !! Some people will have vegetables to weight before the August 1. How do you do ? Thanks Fabrice Boudyo

Fabrice, why do you always post for Mehdi? Mehdi has contacted me more than 10 times about this topic over the past two weeks and I have sent him the answers at least four times. I am not sure if they all made it, but I am sure a few did.
Mehdi grew his huge carrot and radish in 2010. He did not meet the November 1 deadline, so waited a few more months and harvested it at the beginning of 2011. For this reason they are disqualified.
Furthermore the rules state that all non-perishable vegetables must be weighed at an official weigh-off. Neither his radish or carrot were.
The weigh-off season in the Northern Hemisphere runs from August 1 (some US State Fairs) through November 1, with the exception of the Royal Fair in Toronto which is later than November 1. To make things fair the EGVGA has decided to use these dates to make competition fair for everybody from Alaska to Great Britain to Finland and prevent all kinds of semi-official results and two-year-old vegetables which would always be disqualified at an official weigh-off.

Consider it like athletics. During the practise season you run the 100 meter race in 9.70 seconds. During the official race, you run 9.90 seconds. The 9.90 will count and the 9.70 won't, eventhough you were faster then.
It is all about peaking at the right time. Getting a vegetable to be its biggest out of season means you miscalculated something somewhere. We all do it. Often the biggest vegetables are not at the show. The game is to get it right.

I will inform the guinness world records which I can beat a record this year.
Because if I have a vegetable before August 1 and that it does not count for the egvga, if it is a Record of the world it will be in the guinness world records.
For me it is a solution.
For the record of the world, nothing of some.
I prefer to envisage !!

the guinness world records has far more rules than the egvga does so I wouldn't be that sure about that

I am to inform for the guiness.
It is not difficult.
It should be said to them that you can beat a record.
One needs the date of plantation, pollination, and the day or you weight the vegetable, a representant of Guiness is with you and it is official.
The only problem it that you can pay he representant of the Guiness.

well if you think that it is so easy, why are you always complaining about the EGVGA rules? if you say that you don't need the EGVGA to get an offical record why are you making trouble about all those rules?

I said simply that if we weigh some vegetables before 1 er Aout or after November 1st, they would not be register on THE EGVGA. It is a pity not to register them if it is a Record like the previous years. Brad explains why!! To be more fair, I agree. Some time ago, Brad has weighed the biggest squash himself it was a Record of the World, with witnesses and notary while he shall have of to go to a competition. Today he decides of dates, and obliges the persons to go to an official competition, to approve some vegetables. I think that some European growers have the same opinion, but they dare to say nothing, because they do not want to be a pain. I wish the fairest way for everybody, I do not try to make of problems. 365 Days!!! The race begins and it is the freedom for everybody. Freedom! Equality!

Fabrice, this is once again a copy of Mehdi's last email to me.
When I weighed my WR squash in 2007, it was in September and there was no weigh-off in the entire country. The first Dutch weigh-off was in 2009. I received no prize money from any club or organization.
Second of all, the EGVGA board decides, not just me. And we have experienced growers outside of the board that are asked to give us advice. I reply because I am the awards and records coordinator.
Till 2011, there were no prizes for most giant vegetables, so we didn't have to worry about the rules too much. But this year we do have prizes, so we have to follow official rules.
If everybody weighs their own vegetables and pumpkins whenever they have stopped growing, there will be no weigh-offs anymore and things will be a mess.
France has at least two weigh-offs, so I don't think you will have a problem. To my knowledge no WRs were ever grown before August 1, so I don't think that will be a problem either.

Just to put things clear : I talked to Fabrice 2 weeks ago about all the differents changes. I don't send him any copies, he decided himself to make this topic , to say what he wants to say. The second weigh off in France is purely for pumpkins and nothing else. I don't want any prizes, I just want to get an official weight of all my giant vegts as the others EGVGA years. For example, I spent 365 days of cares almost every day for my carrot but it doesnt count in EGVGA cos of the 2011 new rules. All these efforts for nothing this time. The "new" game is to get it right.

Can I say one thing which resolves this whole problem, rules are set by the board members of the EGVGA past and present and if people don't want to follow these rules then don't exhibit / enter the weigh-offs!

On dit simplement ce que l'on pense ! Les régles c'est bien mais il faut penser que tout le monde n'a pas le meme climat et par conséquent tout le monde peut pas partir à la meme date .

We just said that we think! The rules it is well but it should be thought that everyone does not have the same climate and consequently everyone cannot leave at the same date

The EGVGA board has decided not to accept entries outside of the August 1 to November 1 period (with the exception of the Royal Fair in Toronto which is held just after November 1).
It is impossible to make rules that will make everything equal to all members. There are differences in climates, soil, money being spent, etc, etc. So we try to make it as fair as possible. Fair is different than equal.
Climate is absolutely no excuses for not taking vegetables to a weigh-off. A good grower will learn how to plan everything so the giant vegetables reach their potential on the right date. And every year something will fail. That happens.
Except for very few, most countries only have one giant vegetable show. Alaska only has one, and for the whole range of giant vegetables, Ontario also only has one. Many European countries only have one too, such as Finland, Holland, Sweden, etc.
It is an old game, getting things ready on time. I started showing in the 80s and that was how it was then, but research shows that getting it right on the right date goes back to the first half of the 19th century.
Practise makes perfect. It might take you a year or two get things right, but it can happen. It is even more exciting!
Good luck to all!
