After I add all the manure and amendments to the soil in the fall.....was is the amount of winter rye cover crop i should spread on my 1000 sq. ft. patch?

any ideas?

40-80 Lbs per acre means 1.8 lbs per 1000 sq ft at the high rate.

Most people grossly over apply winter Rye.

Like I said. Everyone I know uses too much then cries in the spring about getting it tilled & broken down.

Sow it now so you get germination before the soil temperature drops.

I'm one of those who grossly over apply winter rye and I've been doing it for 35 years. I plant 100# on 2800 sq ft. I let it grow to about 6-8 inches tall in the spring and then till it in. It decomposes in 3-4 weeks and then it's ready to plant. Yes, it grows very thick but that means more humas for the soil. Like I said, been doing it for 35 years and my soil is great.
