How are grass clippings for the garden? Should they be applied directly into the soil or composted first? How is tilling them in?

Don Young just spoke at our seminar over the weekend, and he adds his clippings to the perimeter of his plants and lets them decompose in the patch during the season. I have never done this, but what the heck...1662 can't be all that bad.

Only do that if you're 100% sure there hasn't been weed killer applied to the lawn the grass clippings are coming from.

Grass clippings will compost rather quickly if you mix them with manure and turn the pile regularly though out summer.

I have used clippings to hold down weeds. No chemicals on my grass (it is more weeds than grass anyway!) As long as you put them on thin, it is OK. If you get them too thick I am afraid there is a chance for fungus problems.
