If I were to dig pits to plant in, how wide should I make them and what kind of dirt should I fill them with?

I have been doing the same, but only a couple feet deep. I add amended top soil, peat moss and some compost

I use heating cables do to cold spring soil temps, pits are 15' diameter and dug to the subsoil, about 2' now. I add organics as I refill with the patchdirt. Works into a 10"-12" mounded area when done.

I make pits and fill with compost, manure, soil mix with a little 10-10-10. I now avoid making a mound. I had too much trouble with vine splits when the mains lay down.
