Does the sodium in alfalfa pellets come from the binder that is added or is salt added in addition? If I use the meal can I avoid the sodium problem? The bag of pellets I used last season said it contained 100% sun-dried alfalfa + bentonite.

The salt is added. Alfalfa pellets can be had salt-free.
