What kind of spring patch amendments do you put down, regardless of soil test? Then maybe explain why.

Regardless of test means, Is there amendments that seasoned growers put on there patch year in and year out. Even before the soil test comes back.

Yes I did get a soil test done, don't have the results back yet.

The only thing I put on without a test is organic compost. Other than that, I rely on my test.

We have a brand new patch. I pulled a test but couldn't wait for the lab before making amendments. Knowing the local soils like I do we made the following additions "blind" to 2000 sq ft before pulling the sample.

100 lbs Solucal (TOG chelated Calcitic Lime)
100 lbs Dolomitic Lime
100 lbs Gypsum
12 lbs 0-0-60
25 lbs Kelp Meal
25 lbs PHC's Healthy Start
Enough Merit to "get it done"

All tilled to 9". Once the test results come back I'll decide if we're on the mark or not.

Tremor, did you add all this before pulling samples? If not, how will you know if you are on the mark, or not? Just curious...you know a lot more than I do??? LOL Peace, Wayne

Brian,

PHC Healthy Start is an organic 3-4-3 fertilizer with rhizobacteria. Since this is a new patch we're hoping the bacteria are enough to keep Fusarium, etc at bay.

I pulled the sample BEFORE adding any amendments. I wish I'd known sooner that we had permission to use this site since fall is the preferred time to do all of this grunt work.

For the record: We'll be switching to PHC's Flower Saver Plus once the plants hit the ground because it has the correct VAM Mycorrhyza as opposed to just the bacterial package. My thought was to avoid placing Myc spores in the open ground with no annual plant roots in the neighborhood yet. No science here, just my gut feeling.
