This board was created as a place for new growers to help them get started in this crazy hobby.

Hi guys, Great pumpkin site you have here. I'm a new grower and can't wait for winter to be over so that I can start planting again. For a new grower last year my pumpkin weighed in at 226.4 at the L.I. fair and that gave me the fever to try this crazy hobby again. You are doing a great job here keep it up . Want to say thanks to pumpkun Bill he got me started in this nutty hobby.

Can anyone tell me what would be the best time to think about putting up a sun shade structure? Does it realy help? Should it be done before the pumpkin starts to turn orange? I used one last year and it seemed to stop growing and the one without the shade cover took over and did better. Any input would be good....Thanks....

I put up my sunshade cloth up when the pumpkins got taller than the vines. It was also about the time the temperature was getting into the 90'S. Good luck.

hi all. direct seeded last year,my firstyear garden. Grew prizewinner. Took first place atthe school fair with a 234# beauty. Beat a couple of veterans and now the stakes are up.This year i am going to start my seed indoors," atlantic giants" this year. What i need to know is how long does it take,on average, from planting seed to the third leaf stage? Thanks.
