Hi all, been lurking for a while, first time posting here. I wonder if someone could check my growing diary and diagnose the issue I'm having with my leaves around the stump. They get yellow edges and then a day or two later completely shrivel and die. Is this a disease, or are they just the oldest leaves dying? Should I be cutting them off when they start to yellow, or can they be saved with some kind of treatment? Just starting to have luck with my pumpkin, don't want a simple problem to ruin my season!

Im sure you see the giant plants in the well tilled gardens in the journals so beyond that I think yer doing good...the plant looks like it’s running out of food to me...and the oldest leaves are the first to go...always be checking the stump and main vines this time of year and you really need to cut the pumpkins vine tap roots that are pinning the fruits stem to the ground...you may need to loosen a few..good luck..and lemme guess- no problems getting up and out to the garden in the mornings?....lol fun stuff.

I agree with porkchop, some times weeds will out compete other plants for nutrients causing them to be stunted. Over watering may cause issues as well.

Thanks so much for the feedback! The weeds have definitely been a challenge, this was an odd piece of lawn before covid cancelled everything and we decided to start a garden. I mulched it in today, more to do though. I also sprayed for bugs, just in case, and watered in a couple ounces of triple 13 around the stump, those leaves were quite a bit lighter then the rest. I have cut most of the tap roots, 2-3 on each side, but I can't seem to create enough slack to meaningfully raise the stem, should I be shimming something under the vine to give it lift? Also, could someone direct me to a resource for estimating weight? Sorry for all the rookie questions!

And no problems getting out to the garden! I gotta get out and wake the garden up before the 18 month old gets up! Hoping for a cool picture with her and the pumpkin this fall!

Holy crap! Double trouble with a baby!...fun!...I would just let it go as is knowing that it has some freedom now..you can google “cc pumpkin chart” or google “ott measuring” for pumpkins...there’s utube videos... good luck!

avoid seriously any stress or pressure on the stem - no warning and 'snap' - followed by '"CRA*!!!"' ha ha ha
the ha ha ha is in real time, lol---the pumpkin is in like a gimbal, (can rotate in any direction in the depression made by it in the soil) so it can be tilted upward at the stem if it is pushed a lit-le bit toward the vine it's on or the opposite if the opposite, whilst gent-ly rotating it upward in the first scenario or the opposite if the opposite is desired. there may be no need for the push toward or away from the vine, but be VERY sure to assist the stem to keep in sync with the pumpkin's movement. there would be no forgiveness, but we all want level-headed pumpkins, to make up for our own lack of, thereof, lol---eg
