That's what I thought, like a seed sprouted and root growing out down the neck.

I believe it is an extension of the germ tube which elongates when fertilization happens. I could be wrong, but to me, it is what comes out of the ovary to signal to the plant that pollination has occurred.

Even if I am wrong on this one, it isn't a negative thing and you shouldn't worry. You'll know a blown up stem when you unfortunately see your first one ;)

I see them often on early culls. Never knew what it was.
