Want a way to increase your odds of a successful season? Find a grower that can mentor you, and help you. There are rookie growers growing 2,000lbers first year out. It is not because they did not network and seek advice of seasoned growers. Heck half the fun of this hobby/sport/obsession is to get others interested in Giant Pumpkin Growing. Been doing this for 18 seasons now. Can just about identify every issue from a picture with a few simple questions to determine the root cause

Any northeasterners (upstate NY) have a good idea of when it's safe to put plant outside this season? Don't want to go to early but I want to maximize season.

If you have heating cables and a hoophouse you could plant once the cables heat up the soil..might need a small heater next week...I'm gonna wait til after the cold and gray this coming week

Like Porkchop says cables and hoop house anytime. You're growing season outdoors usually starts Mid May. I'm 40 miles North in the foothills of the Adirondacks and usually wait until around Memorial Day to plant without frost protection. I know the growing season for Saratoga south is usually two weeks ahead of me.

Agree with porkchop and Big T. My Hoops have been up for 2 weeks and soil temp is still only 56 inside with out cables, soil temp outside hoop is 46 and that is cold for plants to thrive. Cables are going in today and soil will warm up by next weekend even with some night time temps in the 30's. Last frost is usually mid may. If you do put them out you can always cover them with a bucket or a laundry basket with a quilt over that if its going to be cold. Good Luck!

Southern California Rookie here! I started a Dills Giant Seed in April. She's in a 45 Gallon Grow Bag using Coco Coir. I just signed up today and I did post a picture already. I'll admit that every day when I look at her growth rate I get excited about growing her. Glad I found the site.
