I just did some test germinations on seeds I harvested. No luck with paper towel and plastic bag..10 percent. Seed starting mix 100 percent. Was a little suprised to see one batch of seeds have roots eight inches long in three days from filing. I use plastic cups so I can see the roots. Picked the cup up and had roots 2" out the bottom and side roots 1 1/2" long.Small pumpkin but nice genetics 823 House X 1912 Carter. Also wondering why some of the pumpkins have white seeds.

Seed starting mix works better for me too. About the coloring of the pumpkin seeds, dark seeds and white seeds are both viable. I am not sure if the white seeds are less mature than darker seeds, or if it is the genetics of the pumpkins.

Seed shell color and texture is genetic.Orange pumpkins(AG's) and giant squash used to commonly have white seeds. They looked like a oversized field pumpkin seed. White seeds still happen but maybe less frequently. The 2624 world record seed has white seed texture(vs. thicker tan shell) but has a off white coloration. So its a mix of those two types traits.
