Engel's Great Pumpkins and Carvings

Menomonie, WI (mail@gr8pumpkin.net)

I cut mine the night before...bring them in the house. If they do not have a lot of pollen in the morning hit them with a hair dryer for a few seconds

I do as Linus does...put the males in a sunny window for an hour...maybe less...the pollen blooms quickly...did it Sat night w/males...by flashlight w/ cutting of males at approx midnight...obvious by the puckering on top of the blossoms, which ones were ready! Also, obvious...by puckering at top of female blossom, so I covered her w/a white styro cup. After pollination at approx 7am, I tied w/soft string, the female blossom, and put styro cup back on...Been hot here, so I had fan blowing over bags of ice, throughout the nite, and most of Sunday...till I ran out of ice. Hopefully pollination is successful, as this is the only plant I have. Peace, Wayne

Quick question...one of the males that I picked on Sat. evening...when I looked at it on Sun. a.m., it looked like a small robins egg in the center of the male blossom, did not use it in the pollination process...what was it? Peace, Wayne

Shannon you said hit them with a hair dryer for a few seconds..won't this crush them...seriously..I,m guessing you leave the petals on so as not to disturb the pollen? My 681 has probably 10 male blossoms a day. Over 30 fruit so far so I'm using three per female. Finally got a pumpkin on the 1374 and will be using the 681 on it and my 1912 Carter. BigNOrange might be just Orange with late pollinations. We,ll see.

Being an early riser I clipped my males at 5 AM and put them in a cup of water on the dash board of my truck in full sun. They opened quickly and were loaded with pollen. Thanks for the advice on the warmth.
