Dear Porkchop: I'm a new member to this site. And also a new grower. This will be my first year at growing any pumpkins let alone Giant Pumpkins. I purchased lot # 46 at the auction on 28 February 2016. Which consists of, 2002 Hawkley [1894 Mathison x 2032 Mathison], 2058 Hawkley [2032 Mathison x 1985 Miller] . I got in contact with Biddygoat, via e-mail, she gave me lots of good information. I sent her a self addressed postage paid envelope and she's going to send me seed. I'm not sure what she's sending. I gave her the list of what I have. She also pointed me in your direction. I'm wanting to find information on what would be a good seed to cross with the 2002 Hawkley and the 2058 Hawkley. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.. Kent Carrier kmccarrier@msn.com

Welcome hobbit!.. The seeds are probably on the way so I guess it's too late to talk you out of it... I wouldn't worry to much about crosses starting out.., you could cross the 2002 w the 2058 and have great seeds for next year..the soil should be priority number 1 for all new growers...youR plants need to be sitting on good numbers...I would def recommend a giant pumpkin soil test..they will give recommendations , .. And start a photo journal of your progress, lots of folks on here willing to help..!!!!best of luck..my biggest mistake my first two years was only starting the few seeds I got at auction .. Ruined a few ..there are .lots of practice seeds on this site for the asking ...don't forget about Bubbas secret gardens videos on utube .. Great info... He also has contests for beginners...worldwidegiantgrowers..check em out....best of luck!!

I see your point, I'm currently working with a fellow. I call him Mr. Ed, he's just turned 85yrs young. He's been growing for 8 yrs, he has some good knowledge. His personnel best is 1022 lbs. he has no knowledge of what seeds he has, only that they came from someone locally that has passed on. I started with him last fall after I rented his farm house. He did do a complete soil test last spring, he's going to try to find me that info. The poor guy had weeds galore. He just couldn't keep up. So I'm here to step in, and willing to work hard in the learning to do it right. I'm retired from the Army, and have lots of time on my hands and also good at learning from the experts. The Army taught me that, Lol. We did a good job prepping the garden, which is very large. I'm not going to bite off more than I can personally handle. As I said Eds 85. But he's pretty smart. He's been farming all his life. I guess what I'm saying is I'm ready for the next step. I've used some of his seeds and have been practicing seed germination which has gone very well so far. I've watched Bubbas videos and have read various other how to. Thanks for the info. I'll keep this site posted as things progress.

There is a fence around the perimeter. It's currently down on the ends so we could run the disc and tractor through. It'll go back up after we work it again this spring. We're protect on three sides from the wind. And jsterry, I've been reading on this site all winter. Spring isn't coming soon enough. Eds got lots of seeds I've been practicing with. He just doesn't know what they are. That's why I'm trying to find a good cross of seed to buy for what I purchased. This year I only want to use two of those seeds save the others for next year. I personally am new at this, but I have a good mentor that's got nothing more to do himself all spring, summer, and fall. We'll play with his stock pile of seeds.
Thanks again for the info, will keep you posted Kent...
